At the Barre, Marquee Magazine

I remember the photographer choosing me from the Company class, to stretch behind my ballet master, Thomas Armour. I'm guessing it was 1979. The photo eventually ran in Marquee magazine April/May 1983. I don't know if it ran for several years, or maybe they held onto it for 4 years. Either way, I have this one copy which has seen better days, but it still holds the moment.

The ad included a quote from Mr. Armour: "Dance is moving toward the center now - classical has incorporated some of modern's techniques, and modern takes from the classics. But you don't throw out the classics."

As I sit down and enjoy this season's So You Think You Can Dance, I realize his words were spot on. And how wonderful the dance world is broader than ever now. Back then for me, it was strict ballet. I still can feel that cool barre against my warm ankle as the Miami sun streamed in, and how Mr. Armour's smile was infectious. Here's to beautiful dancing days!
