YOUNG ADULT WORKS

The Firstborn Cycle Firstborn, Secondborn, Thirdborn, by Lorie Ann Grover

Raised to work in a male role in a society that denies life to firstborn girls, Tia fights to belong. When exile, mistaken divinity, and the collapse of an oppressive culture force her beyond everything she has known, she must confront questions of identity, faith, power, and what it truly means to live as herself.

The Firstborn Cycle is a powerful, fantasy trilogy exploring gender, belonging, and self-determination through the journey of one woman determined to claim her own name in a world built to deny it.

Following the release of Firstborn, from Blink, the story continues through Silver Finch Press.

 Secondborn, Book Two

Oppressed since birth for her gender, Tia has finally claimed her identity and fled her homeland. With her great raptor, she arrives at a remote cliffside village seeking medicine to save her infant sister. But after surviving a violent storm, she’s mistaken for the living symbol of the villagers’ goddess. Desperate, Tia accepts their reverence in exchange for aid. What begins as a bargain spirals into disaster. Confined to a sacred tower and exalted as the Hull of the Swollen Goddess, she finds herself forced into rituals by the people’s devotion. What is her right as a woman standing freely for the first time in her life? Can an unwitting colonizer recognize her impact and pull herself from the center of their faith before irreparable harm is done?

Thirdborn, Book Three Following her terrifying vision, Tia races to return with Vinti and Mirko to their R’tanian village. What has become of the ruling Madronians and their oppressed people? Has anyone survived the fires? Why do the rapion circle in silent mourning overhead? Will any aid be accepted from Tia’s hand...if they are not completely too late? Tia is no longer the girl who fled, but neither is she fully the woman she fought to become. In the place that denied her, can she stand in her own name, without the armor of exile or the illusion of divinity? Can she become: not a symbol, not a savior, but fully herself? In the final chapter of The Firstborn Cycle, some reckonings cannot be escaped—only lived.

MIDDLE GRADE WORKS

The Adventures of Somebody, by Emily Kay Griebenow

Fairy tales have Prince Charming.

This story has Somebody.

And Everybody.

Setting off on their sort-of-noble quest, the two heroes encounter dangers beyond all belief and perils beyond all probability. Plus, they confront some really disgusting stuff, including slimy gunk, the Great Glob of Pride, and even—gasp—true love! Laugh-out-loud moments will keep readers turning pages long past bedtime.

Fast-paced and bursting with clever wordplay, this fantasy adventure is perfect for readers ages 9–13 (and adults looking to giggle). If Abbott and Costello wrote
Monty Python and the Holy Grail for kids, it might look something like this.
